A baby shower is meant to be a celebration of pregnancy, and to help mom get ready for her budding little bundle of joy.
Nowadays, however, baby showers have stopped being a gathering of family and friends and have turned into a competitive sport where soon-to-be-moms and their guests jostle for the title of best shower and best gift-giver, respectively.
There are several ways to ruin a baby shower. The five below are probably the most common.
-
Serve alcohol
This seems like the perfect anti-climax to a party, but think about it. Why serve anything that the guest of honor cannot indulge in? Just don’t do it.
-
Invite too many people
It’s easy for the guest list to get out of hand. If the thought that your living room is too small for all the people coming has crossed your mind, you have too many people coming.
The guests invited to a baby shower should be friends and family who know the mom-to-be extremely well. No childhood neighbors you haven’t seen since you were in third grade, please.
A simple rule to live by when making a guest list is – If the person doesn’t know some embarrassing facts about the mom-to-be, they don’t need to be invited to the shower.
-
Make fun of mom
Choose your shower games wisely. One mom might die laughing at a game where everyone gets to guess how much toilet paper she uses daily. Another may simply die.
When in doubt, ask. If you’re in doubt, it probably means you don’t know her well enough to be planning the shower in the first place.
-
Family feuds
Every family has them and you cannot completely avoid conflict, but you can minimize the possibility of a fight at the shower.
Talk to the potential duelers before the big day and let them know that if they can’t reign in the hate, they shouldn’t come.
-
Bring the drama
Drama might be a topic of conversation for you and your friends, or it may be a person.
Keep everything and everyone calm. If you can’t get away with not inviting the drama queen in your squad, set the date for when she’s on vacation.
Keep in mind that this day is not about anyone other than the mom-to-be. Do your best to ensure she enjoys it!
